Woman watching TV with a Christmas tree beside her

So here it is… our annual review of the most sleigh-stopping Christmas adverts! Resident telly expert Natalie is taking the rein(deer)s this year, so grab a hot chocolate, turn up the cheesy hits, and settle in as we explore our 5 Cs of Christmas commercials…

The cry-er – Tesco

If the test of a good festive ad is shedding a few tears, then Tesco takes the (Christmas) cake!

Our protagonist lives in a dimmed world where memories of his late grandma linger in a trail of gingerbread characters. As he trudges through the season, his gingerbread world begins to crumble under the weight of her absence. Yet, he gradually finds his way back to the festivities, embracing the joy of his gran’s traditions despite her loss.

Through slick animation and VFX, Tesco’s film is a real reminder that it’s okay to feel moments of grief this season, and it’s even more okay to pick yourself back up and find the Christmas spirit.

The charming – Barbour

Have you herd the news? Barbour have reunited with Shaun the Sheep in their second Christmas collab, and it’s a cracker!

With rivals Burberry recently releasing their winter collection film, ‘The Quilt’, featuring Olivia Coleman stuck in a muddle of sheep, it appears luxury brands may have flocked to similar ideas.

Nevertheless, Baa-bour’s film is a touch of fun, cheery warmth that bubbles with timeless festivity. And – with a new Wallace and Gromit film just round the corner-, it’s safe to say the Aardman hype is at a high!

Two British classics in one campaign? For us – it’s a match made in marketing heaven.

The classic – John Lewis

We couldn’t talk about Christmas adverts without mentioning the merry might that is John Lewis. And… it’s another cry-er!

John Lewis are masters of festive storytelling, and this year’s tale of two sisters is no exception. In search of the perfect gift, the film sees our protagonist step through a magical door into memories of her sister and their relationship throughout the years.

Due to its choppy editing style and fast pace, some have called the ad ‘confusing’. However, with limited ad-break time, we believe this one packs a punch while resonating with those who will relate to it most.

Great job as always, JL!

The controversial – Boots

Boots’ female-focused ad had gained controversy this week for allegedly excluding men, however – with 80% of their customers being female, we’d argue this is a great example of playing to your target audience!

With a star of one of the most popular shows with women of all ages – Bridgerton – at the helm, Boots are well aware of their demographic. It might not be for everyone, but that’s exactly the point!

The champion – Waitrose

Our first prize this year has to go to Waitrose and their compelling Christmas mystery – studded with a sparkling celebrity cast and colour-grading that’s almost as delicious as Christmas dinner.

With part one of the puzzle live on our screens, the film invites the audience to investigate and uncover the clues to a missing festive dessert! It’s an ingenious retention method, with viewers locked in waiting for more clues and the big reveal.

With all this in play, the creative team still managed to spotlight some fabulous food offerings, leaving a mouthwatering mystery on the table.

Special mention…

Our special mention this year goes to M&S Clothing and Home, who take home the prize for funkiest film on the list.

From moving sets to top-tier VFX and a groovy soundtrack, this ad has us ready to break out the sparkly outfits early!

That’s a wrap!

From Tesco tearjerkers to Waitrose whodunnits, that’s all for our review of 2024’s cracking Christmas ads!
