The perfect font combo

Finding the perfect font combination can feel like a pretty overwhelming task at the beginning, as let’s be honest there are thousands out there! But choosing not just the right font pairing, but font, can really make or break a brand and how a user interacts with it at various touchpoints. Just like choosing the perfect complimentary colour palette, certain font pairings have the knack of just looking great together, from enhancing a logo, creating clear visual hierarchy in a print ad, to reinforcing your brand on your website.

The way in which fonts work together is so important and can’t be overlooked or rushed – but it can certainly require some testing, playing and even getting it wrong before you get it right!

We’ve delved into the world of font pairing (in no particular order) and found a handful of combos we feel look great together and work in perfect harmony, bare in mind, not all pairings work for a brand, it’s important to consider the suitability and personality of the brand. A high end luxury brand will require a completely different font pairing to a brand that’s say a fun, fresh childs clothing brand for example. Are you ready? Let’s jump in…

1. DM Serif Display & Poppins

First off we have DM Serif Display and Poppins. A clear, clean and legible pairing with good readability and contrast. DM Serif Display has a delicate look and feel with the elegant serifs and when paired with Poppins which has a clean and friendly look, you have yourself a perfectly versatile font pairing. Together, this combo would perhaps be suitable for brands within the professional sector, as you have a professional, yet a warmth and friendliness to the overall aesthetic.

2. Ruda Regular & Roboto Slab

Next up we have Ruda Regular and Roboto Slab. A modern, clean and structured pairing, again with good readability and contrast. At first glance Ruda looks pretty clean, but up close the individual letter forms have bags of personality and energy! The other good thing with Ruda, it can hold its own at a pretty small weight, making it very versatile. Then we have, Roboto Slab, a geometric font with a warm and friendly feel, again available in a variety of font weights. Together, this combo would perhaps be suitable for brands within the tech arena as it feels professional yet edgy and modern with an overall techy feel.

3. Raleway Light & Frank Ruhl Libre

Raleway Light and Frank Rule Libre. Raleway, a well known sans serif typeface, originally designed as a single typeface that has since expanded into 18 weights, a highly legible choice of font and a great choice for both print and web – bonus! To compliment this we have Frank Ruhl Libre, an elegant serif font that has a real classic feel to it. As a pairing, there is a simple/minimalist look to this duo, think architecture or perhaps fine dining vibes.

4. Anton Regular & Work Sans Light

5. Minerva Modern Regular & Avenir Book

Here we have Minerva Modern regular and Avenir Book. Minerva Modern, it’s written in the name really, it certainly feels like a modern typeface and oozes sophistication. We paired this with the well known font Avenir, a simple and clean looking typeface that doesn’t distract from the leading font choice. We see this combo being used for a stylish high end brand, think fashion, lifestyle or magazine!

6. Moranga Bold & Lato Light

Last up we have Moranga Bold and Lato light. Moranga has bags of personality, with this fun retro feel to it. Placed with the right brand, we think this font is fab! We’ve paired Moranga with the clean simplicity of Lato light to help compliment and bring a balance. Brands this font pairing could work with really varies on how playful a brand wants to be, it could be part of a food, flower or even clothing brand. The joy is in experimenting!

That wraps up our selection of best font combinations, the list of font pairings really could be endless, but we hope that this has given you a little insight into the importance of choosing the right font for a brand. For more information on design at Ultimate, click here.
